Baby bottle warning 'issued'

Friday, 9th of May 2008 - 14:02

The National Childcare Trust (NCT) has called for baby bottles to be clearly labeled after it emerged that some contain a chemical which could pose a risk to children's health.

The trust explained that many baby bottles and other plastic food containers are made with Bisphenol A, a chemical that was recently banned in Canada following a study which suggested that it is toxic.

Although UK and European authorities have moved to dismiss any risk that may be associated with the chemical, the NCT said that parents are unaware of the materials used to make baby bottles, and should be provided with labeling that makes this information clear.

"Although the level of risk is not certain, parents are largely unaware of this risk and do not know which bottles to avoid," said Belinda Phipps, chief executive of the NCT.

"As a first step, it is important that bottles and other items that might reach a baby's mouth, are labelled in a standard and easy to understand way."

Last month, the NCT launched a new campaign, 'Preparing for Parenthood', which provides companies and organisations with a way to demonstrate a positive approach towards pregnancy and maternity among their staff.
